From Seattle, the dance/design duo zoe | juniper returns to Bates to present their visually arresting new work, Clear & Sweet, a powerful search for redemption. This impassioned new work marries Scofield’s angular, intense choreography and Shuey’s cutting-edge videography with the raw, uniquely American tradition of Shape Note Singing. Mixing singers with a stellar cast of dancers, Clear & Sweet depicts moments of spiritual struggle as they navigate the space between their similarities and differences and celebrate the strengths of community.
A talkback with the artists follows both concerts.
“If you are looking for something new in dance, something that goes way beyond bodies moving across space and even beyond dance theater and performance art, this could be just the ticket.”
— Bess J.M. Hochstein, Rural Intelligence
“The blending of their talents has produced some of the most impressive dance and visual spectacles to come out of Seattle in recent years.”
— Michael Upchurch, The Seattle Times
“The complex connection between Scofield’s choreography and Shuey’s visual design reveals an intrinsic truth about self and those aspects of humanity that unite us all.” — Steven Weisz, The Dance Journal
