Inside the Bates Dance Festival

Images from the studio and stage by photographer Arthur Fink

Wed – Sat | June 25 – August 6 | 2 – 6pm | Free
The Hartley Block, 155 Lisbon Street

Presented in partnership with L/A Arts, this ten year retrospective features over 40 images of dancers at work and play at one of America’s most beloved annual dance gatherings. A behind the scenes view through the eyes of a gifted photographer who captured the essence of the Bates Dance Festival.

Arthur Fink’s passion for beauty, art, and culture came to him early and wholesomely. He was educated and nourished by observing and learning from his father, Karl Fink, an internationally recognized Madison Ave. graphic designer, and his mother, Sona Holman Fink, a fashion editor for the international fashion magazine, Women’s Wear Daily.  Arthur also balanced his artistic passions with his brilliant curiosity and mastery of science; earning his undergraduate degree in physics from Swarthmore and his Master’s degree at Harvard (where he was also a Doctoral candidate studying artificial intelligence!)

Arthur’s artistic expression was his multi-faceted, soulful curiosity and reverence for all of life, most especially for dance photography. He especially enjoyed photographing the practice and process of dance, rather than capturing only the performance of it, and was able to do so at the Bates Dance Festival from 2006 to 2017. In this gallery you can join Arthur behind the lens and shutter, and bask in the virtuosity of his art and the artists he captured in stills.

Arthur Fink passed on April 21, 2021 and leaves a legacy of passion, inspiration, and brilliance in his communication skills and in his honoring of dance.
