Socially Conscious Choreography: A Practice for Holding Space

Joya Powell

Dance does not live outside of society; it reflects society. In this weeklong workshop, participants will consider questions like: How does art effect change? In what ways does dance instigate action as a means of resistance? How might facilitators hold space for embodied conversations about social justice issues? We will investigate these curiosities through embodied practices, discussion, readings, and exploration of choreographic tools to uplift ways in which facilitators might craft workshops and community engagements rooted in grappling social justice issues through choreography. Inquiry and process will lead to sharings of short collectively visioned workshops/engagements led by participants. Together we will move to create with rigor, care and joy.
