Reaction Bubble: an improvisation practice

Deborah Goffe

As outlined by the study of proxemics, reaction bubble refers to concentric circles of physical distance between us, and the ways we relate across these public, social, personal and intimate spaces. What behaviors do we correlate with each of these zones, and how might we tap into their unspoken codes as sources for embodied research? More than measuring distance, we will consider our bodies’ range of orientations (to itself and to each other), how gaze also orients and might be modulated, and how each of these aid or impedes connection. Aspects of this framework will provide points of departure and return as we activate the space around us to move alone and together. Through movement, writing, drawing, discussion, and observation we will build on each of the four spatial zones as modalities from which we will generate prompts and scores for solo, duet and group play.
