This course introduces and surveys the authentic movement of jazz dance. What scholar dance Joe Nash called, “The Real Thing” in a 1994 article in Dance Magazine. Students will learn signature jazz dance steps, combinations and routines created by the originators of jazz dance. Solo jazz steps like the mooch, scrunch, jump Charleston, screwball, etc., partner dances like the Texas Tommy, Lindy-Hop, and group/line dances like the Shim Sham and Big Apple. And of course, the history of where the steps came from, the difference between original jazz and concert jazz dance.
