Street/Club Styles
This course is the study and practice of Street Dance Styles such as House, Hip Hop and Popping. Class will focus on learning the foundation and technique of House, Hip Hop and Popping, as well as the vocabulary of all Street Dance styles introduced in class. In addition, students will also learn muscle control, character building, body alignment and terminology related to Street Dance. The history and understanding of Street Dance will be discussed in class to fully understand the essence as to where and why this dance culture was created. Furthermore, we will discuss the codification of Street Dance and its influencers/pioneers and their contributions to a first ever Street Dance syllabus. Several documentaries and Street Dance videos will be shared to support all material learned in class. Lastly, students will share their individual work/movements and experience a collective social practice that leads to interaction/partner work, across the floor and improvisation/freestyle cypher, in connection to house, funk and Hip Hop music, leading to a memorable community experience.
Note: The movement content and teachings of this course is reflective of the instructor’s personal experience as a teacher, professional dancer and choreographer and practitioner in the field of Hip Hop/Street Dance and culture for 25+ years.
