Flying Low and Passing Through
Discover the dynamic movement practices of Flying Low and Passing Through, two highly physical and energetic methods developed by David Zambrano in the 1980s and expanded through a global community of dancers. They are highly physical, fast-moving, exuberant dance modes that build mental, physical, and emotional stamina.
Flying Low uses the metaphor of spirals, fractals, and interconnectedness to build agility and speed in and out of the floor, including moving upside-down and backwards as part of a group. Passing Through builds towards high-energy, musical, leaderless group improvisation for performance. The two forms inform each other with themes of gathering and sending energy, moving through/in spirals, multidimensional awareness, pathways through the room and through one’s whole body, sensitivity of hands/feet/center, and inviting and being invited into the dance. Drawing from QiGong and her experience as an improvisational performer, Sarah Chien incorporates principles of energy exchange, whole-body awareness, and responsive movement. The forms don’t build towards repertory but rather invite participants to hone tools that can be used in their own lives as movers and performers.
