Dance Film: Practice, Theory, and History

Cara Hagan

This week-long workshop will invite both new and experienced makers of dance film to enhance their practice through exploring experimental approaches to filming and editing, while also delving into the over 100-year history of dance film a a way of contextualizing one’s work along a continuum of practice. Participants need not bring more than a smartphone, but if participants have access to other camera equipment, it will be welcome in the space. Equipment will not be provided by Bates Dance Festival. Participants should also plan to bring a laptop and whatever editing software they are most comfortable with. New makers should plan to acquire free editing software such as iMovie or CapCut. Over the course of the week, participants will have opportunities to make, share, and receive/provide feedback on work.
