Beyond the Stage: Creating Dance for the Camera and Screen

Robin Gee

Explore the creative possibilities of choreography for the camera through this five-day screendance intensive that blends movement, filmmaking, and visual storytelling. Through daily workshops, screenings, discussions, and hands-on filmmaking exercises, students will explore movement, framing, composition, editing, sound, and site-responsive performance. Working individually and collaboratively, participants will learn how cinematic tools can shape dance, storytelling, and audience experience. The course emphasizes accessible production methods using smartphones and basic editing software while engaging with contemporary and historical screendance practices. By the end of the week, participants will create a short screendance project and develop foundational skills for continued artistic exploration.
