Afro-Po-Mo

Gesel Mason

The goal of this class, affectionately called Afro-Po-Mo (African and African-American influenced Post-Modern/Modern technique), is to utilize diverse movement techniques to find intention and specificity while reconnecting to the joy and passion of moving. To achieve this the class explores rhythm and momentum, builds strength and endurance, and seeks to increase somatic efficiency and dynamic nuance. We will experiment with different movement styles, forms, approaches and practices that encourage students to move with clarity and understanding. Designed to prepare students for the considerable demands embraced in modern and contemporary choreography, the class is influenced by an array of movement practices including modern and ballet techniques, dance aesthetics from the African diaspora, martial arts, improvisation, yoga, Alexander Technique, Bartenieff Fundamentals, kinesiology, physical conditioning, and life.
