Afro-Caribbean Fusion

Adanna Jones

This dance class fuses various Afro-Caribbean techniques, aesthetics and cultural concepts with US modern/post-modern/contemporary concert dance traditions. With an emphasis on musicality, body isolations, and the use of breath and weight, students will engage with various Afro-Caribbean traditions, practices, and improvisational structures—such as winin’ and the Trinidadian Carnival, Jamaican Dancehall, and Haitian Yanvalou. Ultimately, students will learn to generate and arrange movement through composition and improvisation, using the logic of the different Afro-Caribbean dance practices learned in class.
