About Okai

Okai Musik’s artistry is an onion with many layers. First generation Haitian Born and raised in Brooklyn NY, Okai was beating on anything he could get his hands on to express the rhythms that he was consumed with. His ears were hijacked by the sounds of Hip-Hip and music from the Caribbean. His first experience of playing percussion came from playing drumset at various churches, elementary  and High schools that provided music education. Djembe and Congas became a main focus for more than 15years which he continues to play. Okai is also a member of a couple of Drum and dance ensembles such as Bombazo dance company, Ase dance collective and kreole dance collective.

As a Teaching Artist Okai Musik has facilitated drum and music production workshops for several organizations such as Department of Education,  Carnegie Hall, BAM, TownHall, Haiti Cultural Exchange, Little Orchestra Society, Ifetayo, and many more. Working with these different organizations has allowed Okai to visit schools, University’s, youth detention centers, hospitals, and senior citizen homes all over the country.
