About Iréne

Iréne Hultman is a native of Sweden and a New York based choreographer, dancer, and educator of dance and performance. Between 1983-1988 she was a member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company and served as the rehearsal director from 2006 to 2009.  In this role, she initiated and installed Trisha Brown’s Early Works in Museums and Art Centers. From 1988 to 2001, Hultman was the Artistic Director of Iréne Hultman Dance that toured nationally and internationally, premiering work at The Joyce Theater, P.S 122 and Danspace Projects.  She has choreographed several opera productions, participated in artistic collaborations and received commissions, including Firebird for Gothenburg Opera Ballet and I find comfort for Pina Bausch Company 2 (FTS).    Hultman is co-founder of Firework and Järna-Brooklyn, a Swedish-American cultural entity that encourages interdisciplinary artistic experimentation and exchange. She is a recipient of grants and awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts Award.  Ms. Hultman has taught internationally at universities and institutions including Yale University, École National Superieure des Beaux-Art de Paris, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, The New School, Sarah Lawrence Collece, Ohio State amongst many. She is currently involved in the global discourse of dance and performance and serves on the Bessie committee and the Danspace Projects Artist Advisory Board.  Her most recent projects as a performer involves Xavier La Rois, Moriah Evans , Yanira Castro and Yvonne Rainer. Ms. Hultman is currently on the faculty at Yale University.
