Modern III

This class will begin with a full-bodied center warm-up with exercises emphasizing breath, various movement qualities, appropriate stretching, strengthening and core connection, developing a sense a of grounded and weighted center of gravity, proper alignment and coordination.

We will progress across the floor with exercises focusing on dynamics, level and directional changes, rhythm and musicality, sequencing and sight-reading skills. Finally, center combinations and phrase work will continue to explore sight reading and retention, focus and intention, floor work, inversions, some improvisation and musicality while encouraging personal expression and artistry. The class at times will be physical, athletic and hopefully enjoyable.  We will explore movement with an open dialogue and humor, building a community that encourages respect for every individual and the freedom to ask questions and to express yourself freely. Dancers will be expected to share their energy, not to hold on to it but offer it as a gift to everyone in the space. Courtney believes that a successful technique class is one that is a conversation between she and those who choose to dance with her, therefore what you bring to the space is just as if not more important than the preparation she will undoubtedly do to provide you with creative and interesting material.
